Bank Card Fraud Callers

Posted on 19th March, 2014

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - SOMERSET WEST - G0285 19032014]

Message to all Schemes across Somerset.

This message is sent at the request of the police at a high priority.

Over the past couple of days there have been several reports of fraud occurring, predominantly in the North Somerset area but it is possible that this will occur in other parts of Somerset.

Essentially retired persons appear to be targeted with a phone call. The caller purports to be from the police and indicates there has been a problem with the use of their bank card. The caller asks the victim to call them back and gives a number. The end result of this is that a number of people have so far been conned out of several thousand pounds - each.

Police are investigating this matter however your assistance is also requested:

(a) to encourage anyone subject of such a matter in the last few days to contact the police immediately - using the 101 number.

(b) to encourage residents receiving an unsolicited call from someone alleging to be from the police to take care. If they ask you to call them back on a number please do not do so. The number for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary switchboard is 101 and this is the number that should be used if anyone is subject of this type of telephone call.
