Anti Extremism Initiative

Posted on 11th March, 2013

Dear all,

The police team who work to prevent people being drawn into extremism in the Westcountry will be going online to chat about their work and answer questions.

The Community Engagement Team works to prevent people becoming involved in violent extremism. People can be drawn into extremism from any walk of life and in relation to a number of causes and ideologies including extreme right or left-wing views, Al-Qaeda inspired ideology or single issue extremism. Their work extends from inner-city Bristol right through to the most rural areas of Somerset.

Fortunately violent extremism remains relatively rare and the Community Engagement Team work hard to identify people developing extreme views and give them support before they cross a line into criminality. The team, of police officers and police staff, work to build relationships with the diverse communities in the region and raising their awareness of key issues. They also work with professionals in other partnership agencies to identify and support key individuals.

Vulnerable individuals are referred on to the Channel programme which brings together a range of local agencies to work with individuals and give them the support they need. The Community Engagement Team is a key part of that process.

If you want to find out more about the work they do, or to ask a question, log on to www.avonandsomerset.police.uk on Wednesday February 27 between 7 - 8.30pm. The web chat will be clearly signposted from the front page of the Avon and Somerset Police website.

If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.
