Weston-super-Mare and Brean Down Way Project

April 22nd – May 1st 2017 Construction Party to complete route

At last, after almost twenty years, we have signed the last agreement and filled in the last form to complete the 8 mile long Brean Down Way from Weston-super-Mare to the Napoleonic fort on Brean Down.

We are arranging a volunteer work camp to complete the rest of the work, 800m of new path, sundry fences, gates and culverts and 100m of bird-hide timber wall across the River Axe sluices to prevent redshanks being disturbed.

If seeing the route completed appeals to you, we hope that you can come for some, or even all of the time.  The camping facilities are very good.  We have our own field, near to all the facilities of Diamond Farm Campsite including café. [ http://www.diamondfarm.co.uk/] The camping is free to volunteers. You will need to bring your own tent and sleeping bag, working clothes and boots. All equipment and tools will be provided, but we will be asking for a contribution towards costs of food. We will have our own caterer for at least some of the time.

And the site is less than a mile from the sea, and will be connected by our path at the end of the camp. And there is a wide range of practical ways to help, from raking gravel and filling sandbags to nailing up planks and wandering around the nearby campsites to let people know of the Path.

And then we plan a grand opening ride on Monday May 1st starting at 10.30 at Weston’s Pier and running through to the fort at the end of Brean Down.

If you would like to join us, please just come. The camp work will run from Saturday 22nd April and the camping field will be available from Friday 21st April. The attached map shows last year’s work in blue, and this year’s in red. Although the distance is shorter the works are more complex, varied and interesting as last year we were basically rebuilding an existing track, whilst this year is all new.

To help us plan the work it would be good if you could email us to let us know roughly which days you would be able to join in the work, and if you have any particular skills let us know that too – though none are needed. Please can you pass the invitation along to your friends, and please join Greenways as a supporter in order to help us maintain this route over the years.

Best wishes

We made real progress during the work camp, but there is still more to do before the Environment Agency sign off our structure, so we can formally announce the route as open to the public, on 7 July.

If you are willing and able to volunteer to help between now and the end of June, could you please contact Steve Shrewsbury on the email address above?

The work will be fairly straightforward carpentry - but other end of plank holders are needed as well as those skilled with saws and screwdrivers.
